Having explored many corners of this beautiful state, I’m excited to share my top 10 areas that you absolutely must check out. Our journey begins in the Upper Roaring Fork Valley, where the charming town of Aspen awaits. Known for its stunning scenery year-round, Aspen is a must-visit. The Maroon Bells, often regarded as the most picturesque spot in Colorado, is a highlight. You can easily drive to the lake, and for the adventurous, there are hiking opportunities, including the challenging Four Pass Loop. Don’t miss the Conundrum Hot Springs for a relaxing soak after a day of exploration. History enthusiasts will enjoy visiting ghost towns like Ashcroft and Independence, preserved by the Aspen Historical Society. Rabbit Ears Pass is perfect for hiking or snowshoeing, especially during the fall when the colors are vibrant. North of Steamboat, you’ll find Steamboat Lake State Park and the stunning Fish Creek Falls, both offering excellent hiking opportunities.
3. Crested Butte
Crested Butte, known as the Wildflower Capital of the World, is a vibrant old mining town filled with colorful buildings and unique festivals. Visit in early summer to witness the breathtaking wildflower blooms. For outdoor enthusiasts, Taylor Park is ideal for RV camping, off-roading, and exploring ghost towns. Don’t forget to drive over Cottonwood Pass for stunning views, and check out the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park for its dramatic landscapes.
4. Glenwood Springs and Crystal River Area
Glenwood Springs is a gem with two hot spring resorts, an amusement park, and a plethora of dining options. You can raft down the Colorado River or take a scenic drive through Glenwood Canyon, one of the most beautiful stretches of highway in the country. Be sure to visit Hanging Lake, a unique and stunning destination. The Crystal River area, particularly the town of Marble, offers a glimpse into Colorado’s marble quarries and the iconic Crystal Mill, a favorite spot for photographers.

In Summit County, Breckenridge stands out with its charming Main Street and surrounding attractions. The area is a hiker’s paradise, with trails leading to alpine lakes and waterfalls. Quandary Peak, one of Colorado’s easier 14ers, is a popular climb. Explore ghost towns and enjoy the wildflowers in early summer or the fall colors at Boreas Pass. Lake Dillon is another beautiful spot, and the Dillon Amphitheater hosts fantastic musical performances.

Colorado Springs is home to iconic attractions like Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak. Beyond these, you can explore the historic Cripple Creek area, hike around Rampart Reservoir, or visit the Cave of the Winds and Manitou Springs. There’s so much to see and do, making it a perfect destination for all types of travelers.

The Grand Lake and Estes Park area is a gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park and Indian Peaks Wilderness. Enjoy scenic drives like Trail Ridge Road and hikes to Emerald Lake. On the west side, Durango, Telluride, Ouray, and Silverton are breathtaking destinations known for their scenic beauty and outdoor activities. The Million Dollar Highway offers spectacular views, and the area is perfect for off-roadingand exploring ghost towns. Ouray, often referred to as the “Switzerland of America,” is surrounded by waterfalls and hot springs, making it a picturesque destination. Popular hikes in this area include Sniffles and Blue Lakes, both offering stunning views. The iconic Bridal Veil Falls is a must-see, and the Million Dollar Highway provides breathtaking vistas as you travel between these charming towns. Silverton serves as an excellent base for off-roading adventures and discovering more ghost towns, while the Ice Lake Basin offers some of the most beautiful hikes in the region.
10. Twin Lakes Area
Last but not least, we arrive at the Twin Lakes area, which stretches from Leadville to Buena Vista. Leadville features one of Colorado’s most unique main streets, with views of the state’s tallest peaks. The Mineral Belt Trail is perfect for biking or hiking, and the area is rich in mining history, with numerous mine ruins to explore. For those seeking adventure, hiking Mount Elbert, the tallest peak in Colorado, is a popular challenge. Twin Lakes is a serene spot for relaxation, offering stunning views and excellent hiking opportunities. Buena Vista, with its iconic 14ers looming overhead, is also home to several hot springs and ghost towns, making it a fantastic destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
